School Profile

Birney Elementary School is one of the smallest elementary schools in Redondo Beach and home to a talented faculty, dedicated parents and enthusiastic students. Birney is an award-winning school, including the prestigious 2023 California Distinguished School honor.  All students receive a challenging and rigorous curriculum based on the California State Academic Standards. Teachers provide high quality educational experiences for all students to help them reach their full potential. District and classroom assessments guide instruction.

Our Learning Center provides additional support for students in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, grammar, phonics instruction and mathematics. In addition to our Learning Center, Birney has a variety of programs to meet the special needs of students including a GATE program, the Student Success Team, English Language Learners support, a Resource Specialist Program (RSP), Speech and Language support and a strong counseling program.

Birney School has a strong and supportive PTA that works closely with faculty to provide a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for its students and their families. In addition, the PTA generates funding for field trips, classroom supplemental materials, technology and assemblies that would otherwise be impossible to obtain. Parent volunteers provide extensive support in classrooms and in the planning of special programs such as the annual spring carnival, the Jog-a-Thon, Hands-on-Art, and awards assemblies. We pride ourselves on having the strongest and most supportive PTA in the South Bay, and we encourage our parents to play an active role in their child’s education and in their school.
