Birney Elementary School is one of the smallest elementary schools in Redondo Beach and home to a talented faculty, dedicated parents and enthusiastic students. This year marks 54 years of educational excellence. All students receive a challenging and rigorous curriculum based on the California State Academic Standards. Teachers provide high quality educational experiences for all students to help them reach their full potential. District and classroom assessments guide instruction.
Birney teachers participate in Growing Educators, a coaching model that supports the teaching of reading comprehension and writing instruction. Utilizing this model, teachers meet 1:1 or in grade level teams with a coach who demonstrates lessons, provides in-the-moment coaching and assists with lesson development. Instruction is differentiated, and individual student needs are addressed within the classroom. As a result, students are able to focus on one concept at a time, making them strong readers and writers. We believe in celebrating our students accomplishments, and classes hold monthly celebrations to show off student work!
Our Learning Center provides additional support for students in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, grammar, phonics instruction and mathematics. In addition to our Learning Center, Birney has a variety of programs to meet the special needs of students including a GATE program, the Student Success Team, English Language Learners support, a Resource Specialist Program (RSP), Speech and Language support and a counseling program called Project PAL. Additionally, trained student leaders in our Safe Schools Ambassadors Program help us promote a positive, caring school culture that is both nurturing and accepting.
Birney School has a strong and supportive PTA that works closely with faculty to provide a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for its students and their families. In addition, the PTA generates funding for field trips, classroom supplemental materials, technology and assemblies that would otherwise be impossible to obtain. Parent volunteers provide extensive support in classrooms and in the planning of special programs such as the annual spring carnival, the Parade-a-Jog-a-Thon, Hands-on-Art, Hands-on-Science, attendance celebrations and monthly family nights. We pride ourselves on having the strongest and most supportive PTA in the South Bay, and we encourage our parents to play an active role in their child’s education and in their school.
In short, we believe Birney Elementary is an exceptional school, and we are proud of the progress we've made building a strong learning community and increasing student achievement!
