PTA Programs

In Class Parent-Docent

Hands on Art	Docents attend workshops, learning projects based on individual artists or styles of art and then teach the children in the classrooms, step by step.
Nutrition	Volunteers teach students about mindful eating, fruits and vegetables, food labels, water and exercise.
Garden Program	With the help of docents, students receive hands-on garden lessons covering topics including, planting, harvesting, pollination, photosynthesis, seasonal planting and more.

Events

Battle of the Books 3rd Grade	BotB encourages students to read. Competitors will read books from a reading list. On the day of the Battle, students will answer questions about the books on the reading list to win points for their team. Third grade's battle is a mock battle and not against other schools.
Battle of the Books 4th/5th Grade	BotB encourages students to read. Competitors will be assigned to teams. On the day of the Battle, students will answer questions about the books on the reading list to win points for their team.
Bookmark Contest	Contest where kids create their own bookmarks supporting reading and creativity.
Career Day	Volunteer parents (or special adult guests) describe their careers to a classroom of students and answer questions.
Carnival	The Carnival is our school’s largest annual fundraiser. Parents run carnival booths, food booths, and talent show.
Dining for Dollars	Events where restaurants offer money back to the school for purchases made on Birney nights.
Family Night	Birney family (or special, adult guest) enjoy an evening of dinner and games. Venue changes annually.
Movie Night	Outdoor movie on the Birney turf.
Multicultural Night	Share your family's heritage with food, music and fun.
Jog-a-thon	Student participants jog as many laps as they can within a specified time period. Sponsors pledge money for participation. Students are awarded individually and by classroom for registering to join and raising the most money.
Read-a-thon Week	A weeklong event where students log their reading for individual and classroom prizes. The library is open in the mornings for reading and raffle prizes. Reading Under the Stars is an evening event with guest readers, pizza, and a book swap.
Reflections	A national PTA competition for original works in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.
Silent Auction Chair	Silent Auction is our school’s largest annual fundraiser. It happens during the Carnival. Local businesses and Birney classrooms donate items for this event.
Skate Night	A private event where the Toyota Sports Center offers money back to the school for skating fees.
Staff Appreciation	In conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week, volunteers decorate and provide food in the teacher's lounge and adopt a staff member to decorate their classroom door and provide notes and gifts of gratitude.
STEM night	Evening event where students are provided teacher-guided, hands on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) activities
Sweetheart Dance	Birney students and ONE Parent (or special, adult guest) enjoy an evening of dinner, professional photos, DJ & dancing
Talent Show	Student talent show held during the Birney Carnival.
5th Grade Promotion	After the 5th grade graduation, which is organized by the Principal, students enjoy refreshments and a slideshow before leaving for private celebrations.
